Why Values Matter
Your recovery must be built on something deeper than "I shouldn't use." It needs to be built on "I am becoming who I truly want to be." That's where values come in.
Values are the principles that guide your decisions and give your life meaning. When you're clear on your values, you have an internal compass. Recovery built on values is sustainable recovery.
Discovering Your Values
Exercise 1: Your Best Self
Describe the best version of yourself. Not perfect, but your best self. How do you show up? How do you treat people? What are you doing? What are you known for?
Exercise 2: Peak Experiences
Recall 3 times you felt truly alive, proud, or deeply connected. What was happening? Who were you with? What values were being honored in those moments?
Exercise 3: Non-Negotiables
What matters so much that you'd fight for it? What would you never compromise on? What's sacred to you?
Exercise 4: My Core Values
From the patterns above, identify your top 5-7 values. Examples: Integrity, Connection, Creativity, Health, Growth, Service, Freedom, Peace, Love, Family, Authenticity, Courage
Living Your Values
Making Values Real
For each core value, write: 1) What does honoring this value look like in daily life? 2) One small action you can take this week to honor this value?
Recovery Through Values
When cravings come, ask: "Does using honor my values?" When facing a choice, ask: "Which option aligns with who I want to be?" Values are your North Star in recovery.
