The Power of Forgiveness

Forgiveness isn't about letting people off the hook. It's about taking the hook out of you. It's for you, not them. Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

What You Need to Forgive

• Others (for hurt they caused)

• Yourself (for harm you've caused)

• Circumstances (for unfairness, loss, tragedy)

• The disease/addiction (for what it took from you)

Forgiving Others

Step 1: Name the Harm

Who hurt you? Be specific about what they did and how it affected you. Don't minimize. Don't defend them. Just name it.

Step 2: Understand Their Story

This doesn't excuse them, but what was happening in their life? What pain were they carrying? What were they struggling with?

Step 3: Release the Resentment

Write a letter releasing your resentment. You don't send it. You burn it, bury it, or destroy it as a ritual. "I release my anger toward you. I release the grip this has on my life."

Step 4: The Choice to Forgive

Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling. Decide to forgive. You may need to decide multiple times. The feeling follows the decision.

Forgiving Yourself

This is often the hardest work. You know all the details. You can't make excuses to yourself. But self-forgiveness is essential for recovery.

Self-forgiveness requires:

1) Honest acknowledgment of harm caused
2) Understanding why you did it (not excusing, understanding)
3) Genuine remorse
4) Making amends where possible
5) Changed behavior going forward

The Self-Forgiveness Ritual

Write a letter to yourself from a wise, loving mentor. What would they say? How would they comfort you? Read it out loud. Cry if you need to. Burn it if that helps mark the moment.
