The Path to Repair

Addiction damages trust. Rebuilding trust takes consistent, honest action over time. There's no shortcut. There's only showing up differently, day after day, week after week, month after month.

Assessing Relationship Damage

List Key Relationships: Family, friends, partner, colleagues. Next to each, rate: Strong? Damaged? Broken? Neutral?

Specific Harms: For damaged relationships, what specific harms did you cause? Be concrete. Lies told? Trust broken? Money borrowed? Time promised but not delivered? Emotional damage?

Their Perspective: Imagine their side. How have your actions affected them? What are they feeling? What do they need from you?

The Repair Process

Step 1: Honest Acknowledgment

"I hurt you by ____. I know that caused you ____. I take responsibility. It wasn't okay."

Step 2: No Excuses

Don't explain why. Don't ask them to understand. Don't defend yourself. Just own it. "I was struggling with addiction and I handled it badly."

Step 3: Amends

Ask: "What can I do to make this right?" Then do it. Keep doing it. Amends isn't a one-time conversation. It's changed behavior over time.

Step 4: Changed Behavior

Be different. Follow through on commitments. Show up. Be honest. Keep showing up. Trust is rebuilt through consistent trustworthy behavior. This takes time.

Realistic Expectations

Some relationships will heal. Some won't. Some will take years. Some will require distance. Honor people's boundaries. You don't get to decide when they forgive you. You only control showing up different.

Focus on those who are willing to rebuild with you. Invest there. Let the others know you're sorry and available if they want to talk, then give them space.
