The Stress Response

Your nervous system is designed to handle threats. But when you're stressed constantly, your body stays in alarm mode. Recovery means learning to calm your nervous system intentionally.

Quick Stress Relief (Under 5 Minutes)

Box Breathing

Breathe in for 4 counts. Hold for 4. Out for 4. Hold for 4. Repeat 5 times. This signals safety to your nervous system.

5 Senses Grounding

Name: 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This brings you to the present moment.

Cold Water Reset

Splash cold water on your face or hold ice. This activates your vagus nerve and calms panic.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Tense each muscle group for 5 seconds, then release. Start with toes, move up to your head. Notice the difference.

Longer Stress Management

Exercise

Movement metabolizes stress hormones. Walk, dance, run, stretch. 20-30 minutes of movement changes your neurochemistry.

Sleep

Stress management starts with sleep. Aim for consistent bedtime. No screens 1 hour before bed. Cool, dark room.

Connection

Loneliness amplifies stress. Spend time with people. Call someone. Join a group. Human connection is medicine.

Nature

Spend time outside. Bare feet on earth. Trees. Water. Nature resets your nervous system.
